Description
Medical and mystical considerations from thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail. This lecture will discuss statistics about the 2200 mile long Appalachian Trail and the backpackers that hike it, including the most commonly encountered health conditions. We will review case studies from rescues/transfers from the AT seen at local community hospitals and the level one trauma center in Roanoke, VA. Lastly, we will discuss the psychological effects of a long-distance hike and the response to physical trauma.

While the rates overall of children spending time outdoors have been decreasing with time recently, the rates of this special population's entry into wilderness sports and extreme situations is increasing. The recognition and subsequent readiness for the treatment of children is therefore paramount in the readiness evaluation of any response personnel. Therefore it is a requirement of the responder to obtain and practice knowledge of conditions and the implementation of specialty equipment and considerations especially in the austere and rescue setting.
