Description
WLS:MP is a practical hands-on certification course originally developed at the University of Utah School of Medicine in 1997 that teaches medical professionals how to manage medical and trauma emergencies when traditional medical facilities are not readily accessible.  WLS:MP was developed to create a standard in treating injuries and illnesses in a wilderness environment. Topics include: patient assessment, treatment guidelines for life support until definitive care or evacuation is available, and techniques and guidelines for evacuation. All registrants who pass the written exam will receive the WLS:MP certification that is valid for four years.

The WSMH Tapting project is a result of a commitment to a long-standing vision by the late Wongchhu Sherpa to give back to his boyhood village in Nepal after achieving success with his tourism business. After spearheading the development of roads, hydro-power projects, water projects, and a school in his local community, when asked what else he wanted to accomplish before passing away on December 30, 2015, he stated his wish to bring better access and quality healthcare to his Chyangba village and lower Solukhumbu region – a community of approximately 30,000 people. This project is derived from his family and many friends at the WMS, Everest ER, and others wanting to fulfil that wish.

Climate change is causing wildfires to become more common, bigger, and part of longer and longer seasons.  In response, we look to wildland firefighters to be the “first responders” protecting our wildlands.  However, wildland firefighter safety and emergency medical care is an area of study which has seen shockingly little research.  And the limited and often dated research which has been done has shown high morbidity and mortality.  Join a discussion on epidemiology, agency protocols and their expectations of firefighters, wilderness first aid training for firefighters, and opportunities for the wilderness medicine community to become involved in protecting those who protect our wilderness and wildlands – wildland firefighters.

Essentials of River Safety and Rescue workshop teaches recognition and avoidance of common river hazards, execution of self-rescue techniques, and simple rescues of paddlers in distress. Emphasis is placed both on personal safety and on simple, commonly used skills. Fundamental techniques for dealing with hazards that carry greater risks for both victim and rescuer, such as entrapments, and pins, also are taught. Participants should wear and bring: 1.  Closed-toed shoes suitable for wearing in the water, and that will provide traction on wet rocks (old tennis shoes work great). Shoes should fit snugly and stay on the feet while swimming. 2.  Appropriate clothing to provide thermal and sun protection. The water will be cool, and the air temps will likely be hot. You will be swimming in the river. Although drysuits or full wetsuits are not recommended or required, your choice of clothing will impact your comfort level in potentially cold water. Thin (1.5-3 mil) neoprene pants/shorts provide good thermal protection and abrasion resistance. Long sleeved sun shirts are also recommended.  3.  Water/Snacks

As wilderness medicine professionals seek out new challenges they may encounter opportunities to work or volunteer for humanitarian organizations providing services in conflict environments supporting refugee populations, training healthcare providers, or delivering patient care. This new arena requires additional skills and knowledge before stepping in to ensure safe and effective operations. Common deficiencies will be highlighted and attendees will be shown pathways to correct those. Resources for self-guided learning will be provided enabling attendees to identify how their practice of medicine may be adapted in resource limited environments. Individuals will be confronted with ethical questions, emotional burdens, and physical risks to help them better assess if this is the particular niche of humanitarian medicine they wish to enter. Upon conclusion of the presentation and following some honest self-reflection, attendees will be able to assess their fitness for different mission types and organizational structures empowering them to decide which opportunities they should take part in.
