Advanced Navigation: Course Competition (Wed)
Fee: $110
Have fun as you test your proficiency and demonstrate your map and compass navigation skills. Participate in this orienteering course to test your competency. Prizes will be awarded to all who take the challenge. Prior map and compass experience recommended. You will need to be able to hike up and down the mountain slopes of Snowmass. This course is outside so please come prepared for weather changes.
Alligators & Other Large Animal Attacks Overview of
the American alligator distribution, behavior, injuries from attack, and alligator hunting. Other large animal injuries include wild boar, whitetail deer, coyotes, etc.
Anaphylaxis in the Backcountry: Recognize, Treat, and Transport Attendees will gain new and in-depth knowledge of this potentially life-threatening condition, with an emphasis on recognition and optimal treatment. Attendees also will become familiar with both epinephrine autoinjectors, and skilled in their use with hands-on training.
Antibiotics in the Wilderness This workshop will discuss antibiotic choices for a variety of wilderness situations ranging from the common to the weird.
Backcountry Foot Care – Beyond Moleskin From day hikes to endurance races: this hands-on workshop teaches different tools and techniques to recognize, treat, and master the art of backcountry foot care.
Backcountry Snowmobile Accidents and Prevention This is a case-based review of common injuries related to snowmobiling. We will review the mechanisms of injury and preventative strategies regarding snowmobile accidents. We will also discuss the minimal safety recommendations for backcountry snowmobile travel.
Care of Common Backcountry Eye Conditions Participants will double evert eyelids, stain corneas, place bandage contact lenses, estimate intraocular pressure, and review algorithms, eye kits, and mnemonics.
Case Studies in Altitude Medicine The faculty will present actual case histories of interesting altitude-related problems. What would you do in these scenarios? Test your decisions against the experts. Bring your own cases, including imaging studies, etc., to present and discuss
with the group.
Critical Therapeutics for the Field This workshop will introduce new technologies for field diagnosis and standby treatment of life-threatening medical emergencies in extreme settings (comment: select diagnostics and therapeutics that will be discussed are investigational and have
not been approved by the FDA or EMEA-Europe).
Desert Survival Learn about one of the most interesting and beautiful environments on earth and what to do if you have to survive there. Topics will include the desert survival kit, desert shelters, obtaining water and food, desert travel, signaling, and hazards that you may encounter.
Diarrhea from Wilderness and Foreign Travel: Case Studies Diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of food poisoning, Giardia, traveler’s diarrhea, and other gut problems that can disrupt your trip, illustrated with case
studies (no samples).
Expedition Medicine: What to know before you accept that free trip! It’s about a lot more than what meds to bring. This workshop will prepare you to answer the very important questions about medic roles, formulary selection, liability issues and more, and provides up-to-date resources to help you plan a trip as an expedition medic.

Fly Fishing (Sat & Sun) Fee: $95
This two-part workshop includes 3 hours of practical casting instruction, as well as 3 hours of presentations on equipment selection, fly patterns, knots, and fishing strategies for Rocky Mountain trout. Dry
fly techniques will be emphasized.

Fracture/Dislocation Care This special “hands-on” workshop with Dr. Serra will cover diagnosis, concerns, and treatment of fractures and dislocations in the wilderness.
Functional Core Training for the Outback
(Sat or Mon) Fee: $55
No crunches or forward bending that pressures discs. Learn fun, quick techniques to straighten posture, fix lower back pain from hiking and backpacks, and functionally strengthen, from simple moves to
the toughest you can get. Bring a backpack.
Global Crimes, Incarceration and Quarantine This case-based program will investigate common causes, predictors and strategies for avoiding violent crimes, imprisonment, or political or public health quarantine when traveling in foreign countries. This workshop includes strategies for ensuring personal and expedition security, strategies for avoiding operations that target western travelers, legal and repatriation options, and contents of“rapid kits.”
GPS Navigation with UTM Position Format
(Mon or Tue) Fee: $80
Advance your navigation skills into the world of satellite technology! A GPS is provided and you will learn how to mark waypoints, build routes, retrace your route plus much more. The UTM position format system is widely used by Search and Rescue throughout the US. You will learn to input and extrapolate data from you GPS to aid in all navigational
needs. All equipment provided. Class is both indoors and outdoors. Please wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for rain or shine.
Great Gear for Work & Play Overview of medical and nonmedical equipment, with special focus on light, compact gear.
Helicopter Rescue in the Backcountry This workshop will focus on how ground search and rescue operations interface with helicopters, including indications, advantages, and limitations of helicopter rescue. Short haul and hoist operations will also be discussed. Cases will
be presented.
“High Risk, Soloist and Special Operations” Medicine This workshop will address medical preparedness, training, provisioning and protocols for international rescuers, soloist sojourners and special operatives traveling in austere, chaotic and hostile environments. Protocols for operational risk-reduction and for maximizing return will be discussed. Case studies in end-of-path and complex international medical evacuation will be presented.
How to Give a Great Talk This workshop will review how to prepare and give a high-quality presentation.
Hypothermia Treatment and In-Field Cold Re-Warming Dr. Giesbrecht (aka Dr. Popsicle), the world’s expert in cold physiology, will discuss and demonstrate techniques and tools for in-field treatment for the hypothermic victim. Find out what you thought was true, is not.
If You Touch Your Cell Phone You Will Die: Saving Your Life from a Submerging Vehicle Learn that our automatic response in a floating vehicle could kill you. Find out what over 80 vehicle submersions (with people in them) have taught us about successful escape. Amazing video
will highlight this session.
Knots and Basic Self Rescue Skills What do you do when you find yourself stuck in a technical environment and only have limited supplies. This workshop will teach some basic knots and techniques that may help save your life in a high angle, swift water, or other situations.
Leave No Trace Learn how to minimize impact on the pristine areas you travel and camp in. Topics discussed will be planning, fire building, human waste disposal, choice of gear, durable surfaces and wilderness ethics.
Litters and Packaging A hands-on workshop reviewing packaging a patient in a variety of commercial and improvised litters, as well as long-term care considerations.
Map and Compass Navigation (Sat or Sun)

Navigation is an essential skill for anyone traveling in the wilderness. This class will teach the fundamentals of map reading, orienteering, and route finding with hands-on practice. All equipment provided.

Medical Direction for SARS, EMS, NPS and Wilderness Medical Groups Medical direction of wilderness medicine agencies has special conditions that differ from the traditional“front country” medical direction. This workshop is meant to be a discussion on some of the topics that may be experienced and what ways protocols and other skills can be implemented in the wilderness setting.
Medical Volunteering Seminar will focus on medical problems that long-term health care workers face in the developing world. It will include travel immunizations, food precautions, in-the-field water disinfection techniques, long term malaria RX, prevention and treatment of traveler’s diarrhea, HIV/AIDS risk for health professionals and how to use on-line sources to find and evaluate medical positions abroad.
Parasites in the Wilderness Dr. Lemery will review and discuss the latest in diagnosis and treatment for a wide variety of parasitic ailments facing the wilderness traveler.
Pioneering Skills Learn helpful knots and lashings to use in the outdoor setting for building shelters, camp improvement, improvisation, hauling firewood etc.
Prevent and Fix Injuries (Sun or Tue)

Fast moving, jam packed, hands-on workshop to prevent and rehab sprains, bad arches, knee, disc, shoulder, upper back, lower back, SI joint, and mystery back pain.
Psychologic Reactions to Wilderness Accidents A discussion of the psychologic reactions that should be anticipated with wilderness accidents including: normal and abnormal reactions in rescuers and in accident victims; situations and events that precipitate such reactions;
measures that should be taken to minimize the harmful effects of such reactions, particularly long-term problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder.
Rabies: An Overview and Update A review of the contemporary epidemiology of rabies in North America and worldwide, particularly the animal hosts for this infection; indications and techniques for postexposure prophylaxis; currently available vaccines and immune sera in developed countries and in developing nations; precautions and preventive measures that should be taken by travelers.
Radical Medical Innovation In this presentation game-changing and life-transforming medical technologies from the nation’s leading agencies
and innovators will be presented. Discussions will include the release of new broad-spectrum medical countermeasures, immune hardening, maintenance of optimum performance during stress, biological inspiration of dive and aeromedical technologies and nerve-machine interfaces.
Search and Rescue Medical Kits This workshop is geared toward helping participants design their own medical kits. The basic principles of medical kit preparation will be discussed (such as size of group, terrain, remoteness of area, skill level of providers, etc.). There will be a hands-on portion to expose students to new EMS and other medical technologies that can be taken to the wilderness.

Survival 101: Surviving the Unexpected Night Out (Sat or Sun)
Fee: $95
This workshop answers the question, “Could I survive an unexpected night out?” on a personal level. It reviews both the psychology and the physiology of survival under arduous conditions. During the workshop commercial survival kits will be available and evaluated by the instructors who also display the equipment they routinely carry. The selection and use of effective clothing will also be discussed and demonstrated.
Survival: Beyond the Unexpected Night Out (Mon or Tue)
Fee: $95
During this workshop participants will practice, under the guidance of the instructor, effective fire building techniques, selection of safe shelter sites, erecting efficient emergency shelters and methods used to attract the attention of rescuers. This is a hands-on workshop conducted in the field - wear clothing suitable for working in the outdoors and walking or hiking shoes. This workshop can be taken without taking Survival 101.
Survival Technology: What’s New? (Wed)
Fee: $95
During this show-and-tell workshop you will learn about the latest and greatest in survival technology – including electronics, beacons, filtration, laser signals and survival knives.
Training & Exercise at Altitude Training for wilderness adventure requires a multi-disciplinary regimen that will insure psychological, aerobic, and musculo-skeletal fitness and thus optimize one’s safety, enjoyment, and preparedness. Topics will encompass the high altitude and wilderness environment and also include training at high altitude for high and low altitude performance. After the introduction, the session will be interactive so that we all learn from each other.
Travel, Wildlife and Wilderness Photography (Tue & Wed)
Fee: $195
Discover the creative photographic possibilities of interpreting nature with your own personal vision. Understanding light, aesthetically pleasing compositions, choosing the best shutter speed and f stop, equipment selection, filters and film selection will all be covered in this inspirational class taught by one of Colorado’s finest professional photographers. A
list of “what to bring” will be sent to registrants.
Water Treatment for Wilderness and International Travel Discussion, illustration, or demonstration of various methods of water treatment that can be used in the field will be presented. We will also discuss pros and cons of various techniques and considerations to choose a method.
What Kills Us in the Woods? A look at the morbidity and mortality experienced in the wilderness (what really hurts and kills us out there) and what we can do to decrease our chances of both.
Wild Kids: Pediatric Wilderness Medicine Medicine for adventure and international travel with children, which focuses on medical kits for parents.
Wilderness Medicine and Disaster Management This workshop will review 5 international and domestic large scale disasters to identify the role of wilderness medical decision-making in the care of mass-casualty incidents. Key issues in disaster medicine such as resource-based
triage, provider support, legality and end-to-end disaster medical practice will be presented.
Wilderness Toxinology Deadly but beautiful, naturally occurring toxins are found in all families of animals and plants. Learn about the most common poisonous plants and mushrooms and venomous animals that you may encounter, and what preventive and therapeutic measures
