Wilderness Medical Society
25th Anniversary & Annual Meeting
A Personal Message
To our colleagues and old, new, and future WMS members:
We invite you to join us at the summer Wilderness Medicine Conference and
25th Anniversary celebration of the Wilderness Medical Society, where you
can combine your profession with your passion.TM We guarantee you will
not find a better mix of education, recreation, and value for your time and
money.
This year’s conference meets the challenge of providing updated and new knowledge
and basic information and skills needed for safe wilderness travel and adventures.
The pre-conferences, lectures and hands-on workshops are presented by a stellar
faculty with a passion for teaching. You and your family and guests will also enjoy
entertaining and thought-provoking evening lectures that explore science and adventures
in our global community.
The WMS was founded in 1983 before personal computers, mobile phones, email,
GPS, etc., effectively made the world smaller – which in turn has made the planet’s
wilderness that much more precious. Reflecting on the Society’s milestone, Dr. Christopher
Van Tilburg wrote in the Winter 2008 issue of Wilderness Medicine, “We utilize
wilderness for recreation and resources, yet try to protect it for the same reasons.
As medical professionals, we strive to guard and heal our patients, but at the same
time encourage forays to the exotic and austere. And we head into the wild ourselves, for work and play, for science and health,
for humanity. This once esoteric branch of medicine [wilderness medicine] has
now become both mainstream and essential to the health of the world.”
You already know if you’ve attended past conferences, or you will learn first-hand this
summer, that the Wilderness Medical Society is unique in – and richer because of – its
inclusivity. We welcome all who have a personal or professional interest in the wilderness
and health care: from physicians (allergists to urologists) to midlevel providers to
first responders; from educators to scientists; from students to those who are retired;
and everyone in between!
Whether you’re an expert in wilderness medicine, an accomplished wilderness traveler,
or just beginning to cultivate your interest, you won’t want to miss this conference.
Bring your family or come alone – in any event, please join us in the Rockies!
