Overview of the Core Curriculum
Overview
A
broad group of topics unified by their applicability in
wilderness and extreme settings forms the WMS core curriculum.
This comprehensive listing of topics is based on evidence
and, with the addition of well-formulated objectives and
exam questions, is used to support other WMS programs. It
is the heart of the Academy. The WMS Resident-Student
Elective, Practitioner Registry (FAWM), research programs,
conferences, publications, presentation library, as well
as the Educational Achievement and Faculty Certification
programs are all based on the core curriculum. It
is divided into four main sections:
- Clinical/Medical
- Field
Craft
- Faculty
Development
- Research
and Clinical Investigation
The
Core Curriculum is supported by a numeric unique identification
system (UIS). This allows for efficient and accurate
tracking of topics for applications supporting other Academy
modules. Under the UIS each topic/class has an assigned
7-digit code. The system is designed to expand in all areas
as determined by future needs.
The first
two numbers indicate the academic or sub-disciplinary category
i.e. Dive Medicine, Tropical & Travel Medicine etc.
(01-99)
The next
three numbers identify the specific topic/class (001-999)
within the category.
The 6th
number indicates length of instruction in hours (in ¼ hr
increments)
The 7th
number indicates instructional format (0-9) i.e.
Hands-on
(0)
Lecture
(1)
Small group
(2)
Seminar
(3)
Panel discussion
(4)
On-line/web
based (5)
Example:
For a particular Conference, a one-hour lecture on Applications
of gravity repellant to mountaineering rescue operations
might be assigned UIS # 06-034-1-1. An associated two-hour
workshop with hands on applications of the same material
may be assigned a different UIS such as: 06-034-2-0. A brief
30 min. seminar style overview of this topic would be coded
as: 06-034-.5-3
There
is great value in identifying each type of experience in
a unique fashion. Since educational material can be presented
in many formats and for various lengths of time there is
potential for confusion and inequity when determining whether
a potential registrant has met the requirements for registry.
The detailed UIS will allow the use of multiple methods
to track each member's various WMS related educational activities
in a standardized, accurate, and efficient manner that supports
the different requirements for general and sub-disciplinary
registry. It can easily be expanded with out disrupting
the basic system as new classes are added with each WMS
activity. In addition it can be used to calculate and track
CME contact hours for reporting purposes.
Listing
of Sub-disciplines and Topics
Curriculum
topics with their UIS numbers are listed below. Note
that topic names may not exactly match those used in any
given educational activity. Topics within the core curriculum
that are necessary for completion of the Practitioner Registry
(FAWM) are listed on the FAWM Curriculum page.
