Academy of Wilderness Medicine

A note from Academy Administration 01/10/2007:

The Wilderness Medical Society and the Academy of Wilderness Medicine are pleased to announce two exciting new changes to the Academy of Wilderness Medicine program: the Experience Report and Credit based on the Journal of Wilderness and Environmental Medicine.

The Experience Report

The Experience Report is the most significant addition to the Academy since its introduction. Many candidates have requested a way to count Wilderness Medical Experience other than attendance at reviewed events. We have addressed this need with the Experience Report, which reflects the candidate's experience in the following six categories:

  • Board Certification & Conference Attendance
  • Publishing & Research
  • Volunteer Teaching
  • Public Service
  • Practice
  • Service to WMS

Candidates must qualify for 20-40 credits from the Experience Report. Like the course credit submission forms, the Experience Report is completed online, automatically calculates credits, and reflects the totals on the Credit Status Report.

New Requirements for the Core Curriculum

Since the Experience Report counts for 20-40 credits towards the total of 100 credits required for membership, the number of credits required from the Core Curriculum have been adjusted. Candidates must now complete a minimum of 55 to a maximum of 70 credits from the list of "required" topics and earn a minimum of 5 to a maximum of 10 credits from the "elective" topics. So the total credits earned towards the core curriculum now total 60-80.

Grandfather Clause

Any candidate who has already accrued more than 80 Core-Curriculum credits by December 31, 2006 will not be penalized. Those candidates should simply complete the Experience Report until they achieve what remains to total 100 credits.

Journal-based CME

The Wilderness Medical Society is currently developing a system that will allow members to receive CME credit for answering questions related to articles in the Journal of Wilderness and Environmental Medicine. These will count towards the Academy as well. Implementation is planned for the first issue of 2007.
